What We Know About the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 people perished and over 40 sustained injuries when attackers fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have called a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, authorities have stated the death toll stands at 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to hospital.

The victims have not yet been formally identified, but authorities state their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the individuals who are known at this time.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She told the moments leading up to the attack, stating they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, a senior official expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed in the incident, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
