The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Critical Role Song
This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure from Critical Role, revealed a new opening credits. It features the beloved cast of misfits, misfits, and criminals fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at several agonizing personal histories for key figures such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.
All in all, the intro appears amazing. However, I felt that an element was missing in the song choice.
The intro employs "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional song created by artist the talented musician. This piece originating from the official score of that title, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful nostalgic choice, and I believe that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its presence.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that was part of the show's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter the artist, became an immediate hit in my view when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it improved further when cast member the performer added lyrics to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.
Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as the writer, the track was catchy and fun. At the time, I hadn't even watched the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my phone. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of adventurous fun.
The show's intro with "the new song" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its tone is a little off.
Of course, Critical Role has stated that the animated show will have a few changes and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening seems to be among these.
The Mighty Nein will be released on Prime Video from November 19. If you can't wait until then, or want a head start to get to know the personas of the second series, the actual play are available on Spotify and the video site.
