The Lions of Teranga's Emerging Talent Lamine Camara: From Dreams to Tournament Favorites.
As I enter the room, the young midfielder grabs a soccer ball he won’t let go of until after our chat. It’s a powerful symbol for a ambition he has never let slip. “My sole focus was the beautiful game; my mind was set on nothing else,” remarks this Monaco and Senegal playmaker.
His determination and raw talent won over clubs like Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the hardest approval to secure didn't come from a club executive or coach, but his own father. “He was against me playing soccer but it’s because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.
Overcoming Early Hurdles
Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to pursue his career in the sport. A further barrier was his small stature, which deterred local club Casa Sports from offering him a deal.
However, the famed academy – the institution that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following he earned the MVP in a local competition, Génération Foot were “shocked” to discover he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “They took me directly to the academy. They didn’t want me from going back to Casamance,” he recalled.
An Unforgettable Season and Continental Breakthrough
This move set him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” starting with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his country to the title and earning best player.
Soon after, he was unveiled as FC Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” states the youngster. He has lived alone in Europe, a situation his family encourage to keep him focused.
Inspiration and On-Field Identity
Distractions are not really a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “humility” and superb skills. He is also a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His ball striking and precision from set pieces are key strengths. Camara confesses a need to temper his aggression, having been sent off at the start of his tenures at each French club. “It is a habit that is following me!” he quips.
Monaco, Teammates and Future Goals
At Monaco, he cherishes the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,” Camara noted.
Right now, attention is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. After defeating England on their soil…,” he says, pointing to a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.
Regarding a transfer to the Premier League, he remains committed to Monaco for now. “I am very at ease here,” he insists. However, he's frequently ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about winning the main top prize down the line.
“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England at Wembley… it gives you belief.”
Looking ahead, this talented midfielder blends a modest start, steely determination, and big dreams targeting to lead Senegal to continental glory and build his own legendary path in the game.
