The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

As any major honors show draws close, you'll find a clamor for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of followers with niche passions.

Another commentator previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked completely in 2014
  • A different innovative game received no nominations that year
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Just some logic titles barely qualified for niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, however the design in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles worldwide and have been for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
