The Game UN:Me: An Psychological Thriller That Blends Survival Horror with Social Deduction Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled several fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive game where a girl harboring multiple personalities within her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Within her exist four separate personas, each with their own anxieties and motivations. These souls can seize control spontaneously, releasing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Judging by revealed footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a creepy medical facility, while additional clips show the protagonist navigating a desolate church.
An Environment of Personal Horror
"What are you afraid of? What makes you uneasy?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that appear minor to other people can activate a deep instinct within us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are specific to every individual."
The core mechanic revolves around controlling the persona that surfaces at any given time. However, these identities will switch involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the protagonist one after another. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Choice
Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with orderlies all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the lobby have large blooms growing from their necks should be. Flowers are a recurring element, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four souls claims that the body is rightfully them," explains a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."
After a player have deduced a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, since each soul can deceive or hide the reality, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The final entity standing might be a fake. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
