SNAP Payments Expected to Cease for Tens of Millions Throughout Ongoing Federal Shutdown

The United States Department of Agriculture announced this past weekend that monthly food benefits through a critical national social assistance programs will not be distributed next month due to the ongoing government funding lapse.

Closure Continues Into 25th Day

The government shutdown lasted nearly a month as officials revealed the news, which followed appeals by more than two hundred Congressional Democrats pushing the USDA to access contingency funds to cover next month's benefits.

“Bottom line, resources are exhausted,” the USDA stated. “Currently, assistance will not be provided” beginning in November.

National Consequences

Tens of millions of people count on these food benefits, according to federal data. Various areas, such as one southwestern state, reliance on this assistance is as high as 21% of residents.

Documents reviewed by a major news agency revealed that federal authorities chose not to tap emergency reserves for the upcoming payments.

Partisan Impasse

Republicans and Democrats remain deadlocked regarding how to support and resume government operations.

Comments by the head of a prominent policy organization indicated that the White House could have acted to prepare in advance to ensure continuous assistance.

“It could have, and should have acted before now to make arrangements to access these resources,” the statement continued. “Instead, officials could opt out to secure political leverage” as conservative leaders work to push upper chamber Democrats to vote for a funding package that would resume federal functions.

Emergency Measures

State leaders from multiple regions activated emergency protocols in recent days to make money available for hunger relief preparing for SNAP benefits not being issued in November.
