Meg Ryan has posted a tribute to the deceased filmmaker Rob Reiner, who directed her in the iconic rom-com When Harry Met Sally.

A Tragic Discovery

Reiner was found dead with his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, at their residence in LA at the weekend.

“How we will long for this man…” the actress posted on Instagram, next to an image of them together. “Our gratitude, Rob and Michele, for your faith in true love, stories, and joy. Your trust in people's goodness and your love for this nation are remembered.”

Legal Proceedings Unfold

Reiner’s son Nick, 32, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and was in court today. He’s being incarcerated with no bail set. Reports indicate that Reiner’s daughter Romy was the one who located her father.

“I have to believe that their story will not end with this impossible tragedy, that some good may come, some awareness raised,” Ryan added. “Perhaps they would desire a legacy of hope and humanity, leading us toward empathy and tranquility.”

A Statement from Siblings

Reiner’s other children Jake and Romy shared a statement today. “No words can convey the constant, profound sorrow we feel,” they said. “The tragic, shattering loss of our parents is an experience no one should have to face. Beyond being our mom and dad, they were our dearest friends.”

Peers Pay Their Respects

Ryan’s co-star, Billy Crystal, also paid tribute to Reiner with a statement shared yesterday together with remarks by Larry David, Martin Short and Albert Brooks.

“No one matched his comic instinct, his dedication to rhythmic dialogue, or his elegant sharpening of drama,” the statement said. “For the actors, he loved them. For the writers he made them better. His finest trait was granting creative liberty. He valued input and made you part of the team. They always felt they were working as a team. To be in his hands as a film-maker was a privilege but that is only part of his legacy.”

An Enduring Filmography

When Harry Met Sally was a hit with both critics and audiences in 1989, grossing more than $93 million worldwide and earning Nora Ephron an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay.

Rob Reiner first encountered Michele Singer Reiner while making When Harry Met Sally. The pair were brought together by Barry Sonnenfeld, a director and friend.

Reiner’s celebrated filmography also included classics such as Misery, Stand by Me and The Princess Bride. The director and his wife were married for 36 years.
