No fewer than 13 people perish and 98 wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's key government projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” declared the national leader.

The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The building of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its role in national projects. They were executed at an accelerated rate, surpassing predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised significant questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party urged an immediate suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.

This stoppage was requested while awaiting a full technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been running in total accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these national projects.
