Inuit Females Secure Judicial Triumph over Fight against the Danish State over Coerced IUD Scandal.

Survivors from a historical program in which numerous of Inuit women and girls reportedly were covertly implanted with intrauterine devices (IUDs) without their knowledge or consent are declaring victory following their legal fight against Copenhagen.

It has been confirmed the women will be entitled to compensation from a settlement package.

Government Settlement Finalized

The Danish parliament, and state authorities, finalized a deal that entitles approximately 4,500 Greenlandic women the right to seek 300,000 DKK (£35,000) each.

This decision follows a lengthy campaign by 143 women who initiated legal proceedings seeking damages for the trauma and distress they had endured, which they said was a breach of fundamental human rights.

Colonial Background

Denmark administered Greenland as a colony for decades and retained authority over its healthcare system into the late 20th century.

In September, following a long period where it did not acknowledge the violations, Denmark issued a formal official apology. The country's leader apologized for the “systemic discrimination” against Greenlandic females within the state medical apparatus.

“It has had major consequences for the Greenlandic women who have experienced not only bodily but also psychological harm,” stated the senior official.

Redress Process Outlined

The health ministry stated that women subjected to contraception without their knowledge or consent during a thirty-one year period would be able to seek payment from April 2026. Relevant legislation is set to be enacted by mid-year.

Based on the findings of an independent inquiry into medical procedures during that time, roughly four and a half thousand individuals are potentially eligible for the fund.

To qualify, applicants must:

• Submit a “credible report” detailing what happened.
• Have lived in Greenland throughout the qualifying period.
• Declare on oath that they possessed no awareness nor gave permission for it to occur.

Perspectives of Victims

A plaintiffs, who was fourteen when she was told to report for medical attention for no clear reason, said the experience as feeling a violation.

“Our activism as speakers to the media has been effective,” she said. “We started in 2022 and now a relatively short time we have secured an apology and compensation.”

Another perspective expressed happiness, saying, “This is a positive outcome. Like my mother said: it's a victory.” While there is a view the compensation should have been greater, there is relief over the acknowledgment of past events.

Official Reactions

A Greenlandic official called the compensation as “well past due”. Stating clearly, “It is not primarily financial. It is about formal acknowledgment of the hurt and the very severe implications.”

The relevant cabinet member conceded the scandal represent a “dark chapter in our joint past”, noting that compensation “will not erase the pain from the women” yet it “helps to recognize and apologise for what they endured.”
