French authorities to begin intercepting small boats in Channel after UK pressure
France has agreed to start intercepting small boats in the Channel, following months of pressure from the UK.
The change in policy comes after the British leader wrote to the President urging him to support the initiative and saying there currently "have no effective deterrent" in the maritime passage.
French maritime police have been authorized to intercept the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their passengers, according to authoritative statements.
French authorities have infrequently acted to stop the overcrowded boats leaving the shoreline because it is considered too great a danger to both personnel and individuals.
"It is crucial that we deploy these tactics this month... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel."
Currently, a French maritime police spokesperson states officers will begin intervening at sea, with the objective of safeguarding lives.
Significantly, the official ruled out the use of nets to stop boats, which had earlier been reported as a possible technique to disable the engines of the vessels.
This determination to intervene at all is a significant advancement, following a short-lived change towards a more aggressive strategy this warmer season, which dropped off when the former Interior Minister departed from office.
