Democratic lawmakers Criticize Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Capital Punishment
Democratic officials expressed outrage after Donald Trump accused a group of Democratic congress members of being "traitors" and declared they should be arrested and punished "through capital punishment" following their posting of a contentious video.
The Content That Sparked the Controversy
The clip, published on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic congress members who previously worked in armed forces or intelligence roles.
"Like us, you all swore an vow to protect and defend this constitution," the representatives stated in the 90-second video. "And right now, the dangers to our constitution aren't just from overseas, but from within our own country. Our laws are unambiguous, you can refuse unlawful commands, you can reject unlawful commands, you should refuse improper directives. No one has to follow orders that violate the law or our constitution."
The Former President's Furious Reaction
The video message reportedly prompt a heated reply from the former president.
On the following morning, Trump published on Truth Social: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate publication, he stated: "This is really bad, and Risky to our United States. Their words cannot be permitted to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third message, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also shared a comment that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Representatives Respond
Following Trump's remarks on Thursday, House Democratic leader released a combined declaration condemning the comments.
"Political violence has no position in this nation," they declared. "Representatives who participated in the video all acted our nation with exceptional national pride and honor. We strongly censure Donald Trump's disgusting and dangerous threats of violence against elected officials, and urge GOP representatives to forcefully do the same."
The party representatives also said that they had been in contact with protective services "to make certain the protection of these members and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must immediately delete these radical digital publications and recant his dangerous rhetoric before he leads to violence," the statement stated.
Lawmakers' Firm Response
The lawmakers who participated in the video also released a statement.
"We identify as ex-military personnel and security experts who care for this nation and made an pledge to safeguard and support the founding document of the United States," they stated. "That oath continues forever, and we aim to maintain it. No threat, intimidation, or call for violence will stop us from that important obligation."
"The most revealing aspect is that the president considers it liable to punishment by execution for us to restate the statutes," they added. "Our service members should understand that we have their backs as they carry out their vow to the constitution and responsibility to adhere to only lawful orders. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our obligation."
They continued: "All citizens must come together and condemn the ex-president's demands for our execution and ideological conflict. This is a moment for principled stance."
Additional Governmental Comments
The Senate Democratic leader also censured Trump's remarks and shared on social media: "We must be absolutely clear: the ex-commander in chief is calling for the execution of elected officials."
He continued: "This represents an outright THREAT. Each congressional member, all representatives, every American – irrespective of political affiliation – should condemn this right away and unconditionally."
The Republican House speaker justified Trump's claim that the Democrats had engaged in "sedition", labeling the video as "highly unsuitable", commenting: "This constitutes very harmful, you have leading members of the government advising military personnel to disobey orders, I think that represents unprecedented in American history."
The GOP official also according to sources told journalists that in what he reviewed of Trump's posts, Trump was "defining the offense of sedition" but that "attorneys have to parse the language and decide all that."
White House Reaction
During a administration briefing on Thursday afternoon, when questioned by a reporter, "Does the president want to execute members of Congress?", the administration spokesperson answered: "No."
"We should understand about what the former president is reacting to," the spokesperson stated. "We see current representatives of the federal government who coordinated to organize a video message to individuals of the national defense, to active duty service members encouraging them to disobey the president's legal commands."
She stated: "The purity of our military rests on the chain of command, and if that system is broken, it can cause fatalities, it can cause chaos, and that's what these elected officials ... are basically supporting."
