Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer responsible for some of the most iconic looks worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.

His reputation was built on his defined forms and theatrical styles, including the soft-colored suits that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."

This news arrives just weeks after he debuted his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "dress" historically worn by Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he started his work in men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to blend menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in shaping body-hugging looks made him a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included several ensembles for her American tour after assuming the title.

Following a profession lasting half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.

Design circles says farewell to a genuine innovator whose impact on style and culture remains deeply ingrained.
