Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Earns a Major Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
Last October, the late-night programming block saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the channel unveiled a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, evoking a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. In an era often marked by dark humor, this show's sincerity struck a chord and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."
A President's Endorsement
Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about watching this endearing family go about their everyday routines.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing layer of irony. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
The Path Forward
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to bask in the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
