Earth could be under pressure, but a sense of hope remains. A fresh honor from the interdisciplinary festival Starmus seeks to motivate people to make a difference.

The medal will be given in honour of the esteemed British primatologist who died recently. It seeks to acknowledge individuals and groups that protect life on Earth.

Honoring a Legacy

Initial honorees are expected to be announced at the Starmus VIII festival in Tenerife and La Palma, which will run from October 17th to 22nd the coming year.

Reports indicate that Jane Goodall, who was a member of the festival's board, had backed the award’s creation. “The vision behind this award, and the festival being tasked with organising it, was Jane's wish,” a statement said. “Her desire was that she wanted for this to occur. This is likely because of the very special connection she shared with the festival.”

“This medal will acknowledge sustainable programmes carried out to build an environment a better place for people, animals and the environment and offer support to continue that work,” commented a relative.

Structure and Vision

A co-founder of Starmus noted that the medal – which was announced at a prestigious venue – will likely encompass various fields.

“It’s going to be very much similar to the Stephen Hawking medal honoring scientific outreach that we created a decade past,” it was explained. Goodall was a recipient of that award.

Sharing thoughts about the future of the planet, one figure stated, “Frankly, it’s very hard to be optimistic. Certain policies globally is conducting an assault on knowledge. So this significantly hampers global initiatives.”

“In truth, things don’t look very good therefore we must commence thinking again, more deeply about the consequences of our actions. And that’s not just climate change, that’s the entire manner that we treat our environment.”

A Call to Action

Consequently, observers believe this is an opportune moment to honor Goodall’s example. “I think that when we’re awarding this medal, we will be considering this core philosophy of Jane’s – that was her priority, to change how we regard fellow creatures around us.”

A pressing concern at present was highlighted of false information. The central topic of the upcoming festival will be “the pursuit of factual understanding”.

“There is a recognition that factual reality has become contested where political interests are involved. This is an alarming trend,” it was said. “The climate science remains a scientific discipline; it is impossible to allow interference by political agendas in this field.”

The aspiration is that this honor will spur concrete steps. “The purpose is motivating others to get involved and to show concern and to work toward these goals, really. Regardless of if we feel hopeful, we must focus on working our utmost,” it was added. “Accept the possibility of failure, yet we must have to work to achieve positive outcomes.”

A family member engaged in environmental protection expressed hope that “with guidance and when empowered, humans are capable of being diligent stewards of our planet”, citing the work of an institute that, among its other activities, helps young people get involved with their community, animals, and environment.

“As my late grandmother repeatedly told everyone, the choices we make each day have an impact and the responsibility lies with us the kind of difference we make,” it was stated. “We still have an opportunity and the Starmus Jane Goodall Earth medal will provide inspiration and increase understanding about the positive actions that people are making.”
