A Remarkable Twelve Months for Striking The Orb
I couldn't comprehend football prior to the moment I observed the game with my old man. This occurred while I was staying to my childhood home at the peak of the international championship excitement. The Italian team was in contention, and that carried immense weight to my father, an expatriate from southern Italy. Even though I consistently thought the game dull, his passion was completely captivating that it riveted me to the screen. The puzzle pieces clicked that day, immediately perceiving all the captivating nuances the game had to offer and buying into its profound meaning. It was crucial that my father's team emerge victorious.
It's difficult to explain the appeal of sports to those who are indifferent. It takes to witness that epiphany where the fog clears for yourself — or, at the very least, you need an enthusiastic teacher present to demystify the confusing mechanics and reveal the beating heart of the activity. As 2025 demonstrated that this is something a video game can pull off. The last twelve months delivered three great soccer games that dissected the game in distinctly unique, accessible fashions.
The Heartfelt Narrative: Despelote
The most significant entry of that triple is Despelote. This indie game is a slice-of-life tale set in the nation of Ecuador. At first glance, it's a fairly standard story about a young boy finding his way in the turn of the millennium and discovering his voice. But, all of this unfolds against the setting of an monumental cultural event: The national squad qualified for the global tournament, and it is the primary thing happening in the protagonist's lives. Soccer matches are on every television screen. They are shown during ceremonies. It's all anyone can discuss. Ball is life.
Against this backdrop, we watch the young hero develop. He isn't only navigating where he fits in at a social gathering, but where he fits into his neighborhood as well. The beautiful game is fundamental to his being, and it's by way of the game that he discovers himself as a proud citizen. No game has gotten closer a digital experience has ever come to giving me insight into my own dad and the reason he was so glued to the tournament all those years ago.
The Bodily Mastery: Rematch
Where Despelote concentrates on the cultural importance of soccer, two other games from this year delve into the mechanics of the sport itself in more digestible ways than standard simulators. Rematch, the most recent game from the developers behind Sifu, digs into the athleticism of soccer. This online experience breaks down the sport by turning it into a frantic contest played between compact squads. It takes inspiration from titles like Rocket League to create an arcade-style match that's built around fluid cooperation and masterful possession.
I became obsessed with Rematch for a few weeks this year. On the surface, it felt simple during my initial sessions, but with each match I fired it up, I uncovered greater complexity. Instead of just basic kicking and passing, I figured out how to feint around the other team to evade a challenge. I figured out how to release the ball to prevent someone from taking possession. I practiced my tricks until I could turn a stylish maneuver into a effective way to escape pressure. Each of these advanced mechanics gave me insight into soccer in ways I wouldn't have been able to understand as a passive observer. I came out with a better understanding for the critical role body control plays in the game, acknowledging what a physically demanding endeavor it truly is.
The Cerebral Game: Pup Champs
Whereas Rematch revealed the physical side of soccer, Pup Champs whimsically illustrated the mental side. The newest release from the team behind Golf Peaks, Pup Champs is a turn-based football strategy title with dogs. Every challenge requires you to direct a few pups on a board and shoot the ball into a net. Straightforward, but the twist comes from the fact that each dog has a particular kick pattern, they can only move a certain number of squares, and there are hazards to avoid. Solving a level calls for clever thinking and a tight control of the playing area. It feels like you're directing a youth soccer team, devising the winning strategies to lead your dogs to a win. This isn't a serious adaptation of the sports by any means, but it's a wonderful companion piece to Rematch.
A New Perspective
There were additional titles about soccer, of course. Major series launched as per usual and popular strategy titles made their much-hyped debut. Yet, thanks to these three games, I spent 2025 pondering soccer more than I have in years. These titles allowed me to see the physical artistry that goes into a sport I'll realistically never be proficient in (too much running!) and grasp why soccer holds importance to countless people. It's a notable development in game design I would love to see grow, with more innovative interpretations to athletic titles that try to express the spirit of a game rather than simulating it exactly. Furthermore, a handful of additional games accomplished this for other athletic pursuits this year, whether it was the open-world bicycle races of Wheel World or the artistic odyssey of Skate Story. If you don't love sports, there are increasingly more games out there that are ready to welcome you to the club.
