A Pair of Cuba-bound Humanitarian Sailboats Reported Missing following Leaving Mexico.
A extensive search and recovery effort is presently under way in the Caribbean waters for two lost sailing vessels loaded with relief goods traveling from Mexico to Havana.
Naval Search Efforts Deployed
Mexico has dispatched naval teams and military search aircraft to search for the missing boats, which were carrying a minimum of 9 crew members, per a navy statement.
The ships had been projected to make landfall in Cuba's capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and no official word of their docking, the statement clarified.
Context of Relief to the Nation
The Caribbean nation has depended significantly on aid convoys from Mexico over recent weeks, as the country struggles through repeated nationwide blackouts.
"The captains and crews are experienced sailors, and the two ships are fitted with proper navigational gear and emergency beacons," a spokesperson associated with the mission said.
The nine crew members are citizens of France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexico said it has been in touch with maritime rescue coordination centres from each country along with their embassy officials.
"Our team is working closely with the relevant authorities and remain confident in the crews' ability to reach Havana safely," the spokesperson added.
Previous Aid Shipment
Previously that week, the Cuban government publicly celebrated and greeted with fanfare another boat that had delivered 14 tonnes of relief supplies to the island.
That vessel, nicknamed "Granma 2.0" following the name of the boat in which Castro came back to Cuba to start the revolution in the 1950s, delivered photovoltaic panels, drugs, infant formula, bikes and foodstuffs.
Larger Geopolitical Backdrop
Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have largely spearheaded attempts to bring critical assistance to Cuba since January, a period which saw a oil sanctions on the country began.
Global bodies have since highlighted "dire" supply shortages, with over fifty thousand operations cancelled in Cuba due to power shortages.
Diplomatic pressure have been ramped up over the past months, with statements from various leaders underscoring the complex situation regarding bilateral relations.
In response to recent comments, a high-ranking Cuban official stated firmly that "the socialist system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."
Reports suggest that initial phases of negotiations commenced, although their current progress remains uncertain.
The Mexican navy affirmed it was committed to using every available asset at its disposal to locate the vessels and guarantee the well-being of the crews.
As of now, there has been silence on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban government.
